چکیده

The effects of progesterone on lactose synthesis activity and changes in mammary gland cells were studied in pseudopregnant rabbits simultaneously treated with prolactin. The injection of progesterone alone on Days 15 and 17 of pseudopregnancy decreased the activity of lactose synthetase (LSA) and galactosyl transferase (GTA), while the administration of prolactin for 2-4 days increased their activities. Th e simultaneous administration of progesterone and prolactin decreased the increase in LSA observed with prolactin alone by 70% on the 4th day of treatment, and decreased GTA by 30%. Progesterone completely suppressed the polyribosome profile and the ratio of endoplasmic reticulum bound polyribosomes to free polyribosomes induced by prolactin. The increase in RNA content in the mammary gland induced by prolactin was also suppressed by progesterone. The results suggest that progesterone inhibits the lactogenic action of prolactin without interfe ring with its mammogenic role.

The effect of progesterone on prolactin stimulation of fatty acid synthesis, glycerolipid synthesis and lipogenic-enzyme activities in mammary glands of pseudopregnant rabbits, after explant culture or intraductal injection.

The activities of lipogenic enzymes, such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase, fatty acid synthetase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and glycerolipid synthesis increased significantly in mammary explants of 11-day-pseudopregnant rabbits in response to prolactin, in the presence of near-physiological concentrations of insulin and corticosterone in culture. Increasing the concentration of progestero...

Induction of central leptin resistance in hyperphagic pseudopregnant rats by chronic prolactin infusion.

Pregnancy in rats is associated with hyperphagia, increased fat deposition, and elevated plasma leptin concentrations. Elevated leptin would be expected to inhibit food intake, but hypothalamic leptin resistance develops around midpregnancy, allowing hyperphagia to be maintained and excess energy to be stored as fat in preparation for future metabolic demands of lactation. To investigate the ho...

The hormonal milieu in primary breast cancer: A correlation between steroid receptors and serum estradiol, progesterone and prolactin

Background: The female breast is subjected to a lifetime of hormonal controls, whose effect is evident at the time of menarche and during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and lactation. Studies have reported multiple risk factors for breast cancer, some of which are a reflection of hormonally mediated events. The steroid receptors are also served as prognostic factors for evaluating status of mal...

Hormone-inducible casein messenger RNA in a serum-free organ culture of whole mammary gland.

The whole second thoracic mammary gland of estradiol-17beta + progesterone primed 3- to 4-week-old BALB/c female mice was induced to pregnancy-like lobulo-alveolar morphogenesis after 6-day cultivation in a serum-free culture medium containing a "growth promoting" hormone mixture, insulin + prolactin + growth hormone (somatotropin) + estradiol + progesterone. No radioimmunologically detectable ...

The Effect of Hyperstimulation and Progesterone Injections on the Morphology of Mouse Vaginal Epithelium

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological changes of vaginal epithelium after hyperstimulation and daily injection of progesterone followed ovarian hyperstimulation. Materials and Methods: Forty 8-10 week old virgin female mice were selected and divided in four groups. Two experimental groups were hyperstimulated using ip injection of 10 Iu of human menopasula gonadotrop...
